Galerie P6 is pleased to present CONSCIENCE, a new solo exhibition by Danish artist Erling Viktor, on view now until - March 31, 2023, with a Vernissage on Saturday, January 21, from 19 - 21:00. Gallery opening hours are Monday- Friday, 13-18:00 and by appointment.
A common perception is that the motions of an artist are characterised by flashes of insight that arise from the subconscious reservoirs of the mind and brain. Alternatively, with conviction, an artist may take matters into their own hands and act upon the flowing forces of intuition and create with conscience, especially in reponse to a significant life experience or trauma.
In his series of paintings, 'One God', and his installation, 'Silver Lover', for the exhibition CONSCIENCE, artist Erling Viktor works with the conscientious contradictions of right/wrong and guilt/innocence in human behaviour. The resulting imagery combines the motives of man and animal, man and 'machine', the Superego (morality) and the Id (primitive).
The human conscience is one's moral compass. A magic weapon to navigate through the constellaton of life. Conscienceness is a cognitive process that elicits emotion and rational associations based on an individual's moral philosophy or value system - impelling one toward right or wrong. Conscience is introspection and subjective in character – an intimate set of personal laws. However, when one experiences trauma that clouds the brain - that line of right/wrong can become blurred and harder to define.
Erling Viktor has created this series of work for his exhibition CONSCIENCE, as a direct reponse to a very significant period in his life where he lost control, found it again, and everything in between. In the midst of a toxic relationship - having reached his highest threshold for suffering, the King inside of him burst out one day, and Viktor took the courageous step to turn away for good from everything that had come to know.
With that boldness came some confronting realizations about his psyche. Alone and uneasy, Viktor had internal conflicts about himself and the purpose of life, felt nearly hopeless, and went to a very dark place. In the wake of it all, he just let himself go. Faced wih tumultuous times, one can become something almost inhumane, like a machine on autopilot, or anilmalistic even - horns and all.
In these instances, you can be are your own biggest danger - self destruct even, and Erling nearly did. When hitting rock bottom, vigilance might be the only saviour. Confront and tame the primitave tendancies before they consume you. Have conversations with your conscience about how to proceed. Place yourself in the crossfire of clarity and pain.
Viktor had these deep conversations with himself and emerged from the ashes like a Phoenix. In the works featured in the exhibition CONSCIENCE, the artist share his narrrative of darkness and vulnerabilty, faces all versions of himself, and slowly starts to bask in the glow of redemption.

Die Galerie P6 freut sich, die neue Einzelausstellung CONSCIENCE des dänischen Künstlers Erling Viktor zu präsentieren, die ab sofort bis zum 31. März 2023 zu sehen ist. Die Vernissage findet am Samstag, den 21. Januar von 19 bis 21 Uhr statt. Die Galerie ist von Montag bis Freitag von 13 bis 18 Uhr und nach Vereinbarung geöffnet.
Eine weit verbreitete Vorstellung ist, dass die Bewegungen eines Künstlers von Geistesblitzen geprägt sind, die aus den unbewussten Reservoirs des Geistes und des Gehirns stammen. Mit Überzeugung kann ein Künstler aber auch die Dinge selbst in die Hand nehmen und nach den fließenden Kräften der Intuition handeln und bewusst schaffen, insbesondere als Reaktion auf eine bedeutende Lebenserfahrung oder ein Trauma.
In seiner Gemäldeserie "One God" und seiner Installation "Silver Lover" für die Ausstellung CONSCIENCE arbeitet der Künstler Erling Viktor mit den bewussten Widersprüchen von richtig/falsch und Schuld/Unschuld im menschlichen Verhalten. Die daraus resultierende Bildsprache verbindet die Motive von Mensch und Tier, Mensch und "Maschine", Über-Ich (Moral) und Es (Primitives).
Das menschliche Gewissen ist der moralische Kompass des Menschen. Eine magische Waffe, um durch die Konstellation des Lebens zu navigieren. Das Gewissen ist ein kognitiver Prozess, der Emotionen und rationale Assoziationen hervorruft, die auf der Moralphilosophie oder dem Wertesystem eines Menschen beruhen und ihn zu Recht oder Unrecht antreiben. Das Gewissen ist Introspektion und hat subjektiven Charakter - eine intime Reihe von persönlichen Gesetzen. Wenn man jedoch ein Trauma erlebt, das das Gehirn vernebelt, kann die Grenze zwischen richtig und falsch verschwimmen und schwieriger zu definieren sein.
Erling Viktor hat diese Serie von Arbeiten für seine Ausstellung CONSCIENCE als direkte Reaktion auf eine sehr bedeutsame Phase in seinem Leben geschaffen, in der er die Kontrolle verlor und wiederfand und alles dazwischen. Inmitten einer toxischen Beziehung - nachdem er die höchste Schwelle des Leidens erreicht hatte - brach eines Tages der König in ihm hervor, und Viktor unternahm den mutigen Schritt, sich endgültig von allem, was ihm vertraut war, abzuwenden.
Mit dieser Kühnheit kamen einige konfrontierende Erkenntnisse über seine Psyche. Allein und verunsichert, hatte Viktor innere Konflikte über sich selbst und den Sinn des Lebens, fühlte sich fast hoffnungslos und begab sich an einen sehr dunklen Ort. Im Zuge all dessen ließ er sich einfach gehen. In turbulenten Zeiten kann man zu etwas fast Unmenschlichem werden, wie eine Maschine auf Autopilot, oder sogar anilmalistisch - mit Hörnern und allem.
In solchen Fällen kann man seine eigene größte Gefahr sein - sich sogar selbst zerstören, was Erling beinahe getan hätte. Wenn man den Tiefpunkt erreicht hat, kann Wachsamkeit die einzige Rettung sein. Konfrontieren Sie sich mit den primitiven Tendenzen und zähmen Sie sie, bevor sie Sie verschlingen. Führen Sie Gespräche mit Ihrem Gewissen darüber, wie es weitergehen soll. Stellen Sie sich selbst ins Kreuzfeuer von Klarheit und Schmerz.
Viktor hat diese tiefen Gespräche mit sich selbst geführt und ist wie ein Phönix aus der Asche auferstanden. In den Werken, die in der Ausstellung CONSCIENCE gezeigt werden, teilt der Künstler seine Erzählung von Dunkelheit und Verletzlichkeit, stellt sich allen Versionen seiner selbst und beginnt langsam, sich im Schein der Erlösung zu sonnen.
