Ghee Phua
My name is Ghee Phua. Born in Singapore, I have been living in San Francisco, California, USA since 1993. While I have taken formal art classes, I consider myself a self-taught artist.
In oil on canvas, my portraiture and figurative paintings draw inspiration from Old and Modern Masters, such as El Greco, Egon Schiele, and Lucien Freud. Working with live models, I look beyond their physicality to capture the conversation with their immediate environments.
Expressive brushstrokes on the faces and figures are evidence of tensions directly arising from contemporary life. As the conversation continues in the larger works elements from current events are distilled and expressed through stylized symbols.
